About My Journey

Hey everyone.  I am Dale and my wife and I have been raising our Grandson since he was one.  He is now 6 and he is still in our care and likely will be until his adult years.About My Journey

Through out these 5 years we have been through so much including tears, smiles, good times, bad times, Dr’s.,diagnosis, lies, deception, advice, lawyers, stress and so much more that will eventually be explained in this site.  After 5 years we have gained so much knowledge when it comes to all the pitfalls and break downs of a grandparent raising a grand child.

I decided to create this page to help the millions and millions of grandparents out there raising grand kids.  I want to offer advice, answer questions and so much more from a layman’s point of view.  I am not a lawyer, counselor, health care specialist or anything like that.  I am just a Grandparent.

I ask that you follow me to make this a community the best that it can be.  I don’t know everything but together I’m sure we can make this a site that can help so many of us who are in the same shoes.

So now a little about my road to being a grandparent raising a grand child

I turned 50 in May and never thought I would be spending these years raising another child.  Through out life we have already raised 3 boys and sent them out in the world.

To me at this point I believe I am doing the most important thing in my life.  It wasn’t a hard decision when we were told either we raise our Grand baby or he would get adopted out.

Every day it seems there are new challenges that have to be dealt with.  However we never shy away.  We just move on and battle the challenges head on.  Also something that is very important is that along with all the challenges there are a lot of great times that come along in this journey.

One thing that you should do is lots of times I refer to only me.  Just so you know it is not only me.  My wonderful wife has been there every step of the way and we make a great team as grandparents raising a grand child.

Thank you for stopping by and I look forward to helping and learning from you.

  1. Hello there!

What a great “about me” page that you’ve developed! Obviously you’ve gone through some hard times that have made you have to take different unfamiliar paths through life. It sounds as if you’re rocking it though! And your grand son looks so happy and proud to be a part of you and your wife’s life.

I was curious what brought you to Wealthy Affiliate? You didn’t talk about why you decided to help people on the internet find what they are looking for! I’d love to hear that story when you get a moment!

    Talk soon!

    • Ho Brooke.  Thank you for the generous words.  As for what brought me here, well here goes with a short explanation.

You see I used to be very active online years ago, I was making some pretty good money, having a blast and thinking it could never end.  Well I was wrong.  Life got in the way and I had to quit.  Everything ended up going away for me.  But I needed to focus on my grandson and making sure he stayed with us.

So now that life is somewhat normal I felt it was time to get back.  When I seen how many numbers of grandparents were raising grandkids out there I knew I could make a difference.

So I knew about Wealthy Affiliate because I once was a member.  So I knew I had a niche and I knew I could help others.

That is the short version.  Will put the full story up on the website one day soon.

  2. Hi Dale,

I’m not a grandparent, but I know well the positive influence a grandparent can have.

You see, I grew up in South Africa. I came to America when I was 7. During the hard days of Apartheid, the person who was my center, who made sure I embraced the joy of being a child, was my granddad.

When I was sad he seemed to know just the right story to tell me. A story that would take me to a magical place of kings, songs, and wonder.
When I was angry he would remind me that being angry is human, but hanging on to your anger can rob you of your humanity.

Dale, You are providing a vital service in more ways than one. Glad to have met you.

    • That is a great story and Your granddad sounds like a great person.  Thank you for stopping by.

  3. What a great website and very intriguing. Thanks so much for sharing your story. I think there are many out there who raise their chidren’s chidren. Many in my family are grandparents raising grandchildren for various reasons. I loved reading your story with your story about your grandson. I’m so glad you were granted custody of him. All the best!

    • Thank you for the kind words. This is a trend that isn’t going to stop any time soon so we may as well start educating ourselves.

  4. Hi Dale,
Can I share your post with my personal FB community? As you said, this trend will continue to grow at the pace that substance addiction is also growing so I thought my grands-friends will appreciate the knowledge and experience you are sharing in your blog.

    • Of course you can share the post. In fact I am honored. I write everything from the heart. Statistics are for Drs and so forth. So I may say lots instead of thousands and what ever. But thats just the way I do things. I want to write to my audience and not to robots.. So yes please share. If there is anything else I can do please feel free to let me know.

  5. This is fantastic! 🙂 I’m raising 2 myself – my gd for 15 years, and my gs off and on for 9 years and now in the process of filing for custody of him. Crazy thing raising kids in todays world for sure!! How can I follow you? I’m looking all over for a button but not seeing anything? I have a closed fb grg group if you or anyone else is interested in joining us – United GrandFamilies Worldwide. I also have a public fb page – Raising Our Grandkids, Aye Yi Yi and Holy Meatballs. So many millions of us are thinking we are all alone in our journey – Connecting with others doing this is half the battle in getting ourselves recentered after experiencing the life altering events that have brought us to where we are. You ROCK Grandpa Dale!!! (and I’m not talking about a chair;) )

    • Well thank you. I have a vision of making grandpa Dale known world wide. It takes one step at a time and I plan on taking every step I need.
